I think I began in AIS in 1995 after attending my first iris show at the Holiday Inn in Odessa. I did not own one single Iris plant. I was just so thrilled that a society only asked $5 for dues and then I belong to a community! I also found out quickly that irises were one plant I could grow and it would even bloom without much help from me. As my husband’s health began to go downhill my garden became my sanctuary so I could still be close to him and enjoy my hobby too. Being ADD didn’t help much when going through the Iris judges training process but I had great mentors and support. I’m not much good with public speaking, but I’ll share all day with you one on one. I’ve been known to even clean out my Iris beds down to about 50 varieties and give the rest away so others can enjoy iris. Over the past few years I’ve gotten more into learning about all the varieties that I can possibly grow especially in east Texas. I only belong to one other Iris group and that is SLI. Becoming treasurer for Region 17 was never in my foresight. It may be okay though. But also never thought I’d be managing my fathers affairs now and some of my mothers. Bring it on!
